The Farmers State Bank of Hamel was founded in 1919 by the Dorweiler family. It remains independently owned and operated today, and is currently managed by the third and fourth generations of the Dorweiler family.
In 1919, the bank opened for business with $12,000 in capital, two employees, and less than $1,000 in deposits. Today we have over $10,000,000 of capital, close to 6,000 individual deposit accounts with balances of approximately $60,000,000, and a lending limit of $1,500,000.
Back in 1919, the bank started developing the ideals that remain as its priorities today: stability, trust, and hometown, friendly service that’s available when you need it. The bank employs about 25 people, with many of these folks having between 10 and 20+ years of service. Over the years, this has helped build an atmosphere where customers and employees alike enjoy getting to know each other with regular opportunities to visit and catch up. Many of our customers are on a first-name basis.
One of the bank’s long-time specialties is providing the small business owner with the nuts and bolts of financing a small business. The bank’s lending staff has extensive experience in this area and provides the small business owner with continuity in their financial planning and personalized service.
Hamel has always been a unique area with a strong sense of community. The bank has a long history of community involvement and actively participates in community groups and fundraisers such as the Uptown Hamel business group and Northwest Suburban Chamber of Commerce.
An annual community project that the bank is highly involved with is the Hamel Rodeo. The bank’s staff contributes to the team effort put forth by the community, working on the many tasks involved in putting on an event of this size. The proceeds go back to the community: the Hamel Lions Club, Hamel Athletic Club, Hamel Volunteer Fire Department, the Northwest Suburban Chamber of Commerce, Heinzen – Ditter VFW Post, and John Pohlker Legion Post.
